copper pipes

You may be lying in bed and you are awoken by sudden bumping noises. Maybe you’re sitting on the couch watching TV and you hear clinking and clanking sounds in the walls. Eventually, you realize it was the pipes inside your home that was making all this noise, and you want to know what plumbing repairs you would need to make these noises go away. Here are some common reasons why you may have noisy pipes and how you could fix it.

1. High Water Pressure

High water pressure can cause noisy pipes and could even damage household appliances such as your dishwasher and washing machine. The simplest way to resolve this issue is by installing a pressure regulator to ensure that water is delivered to your home at a rate between 40 to 80 pounds per square inch (PSI).

2. Water hammer

If water was running and then suddenly turned off, the running water will put a lot of pressure against the shut-off valve because the water has no other place to go. This results in a thudding noise known as “water hammer.” Water hammer can damage the connections in the water pipe. The simplest way to resolving this problem is by installing water hammer arrestors, which are small devices connected to the water pipes. These devices contain a spring-loaded shock absorber that helps to divert the water force.

3. Copper pipes

Because copper is a malleable and ductile metal, it has a tendency to expand when hot water passes through them by transferring some of its heat. Hot copper pipes expand and contract and can rub against your home’s hidden structures such as joints and other pipes. The simplest method to this problem is to lower the temperature setting of your hot water.

4. Loose pipes

Loose pipes under the house are a common cause of noisy pipes. Because flushed water moves very rapidly and often in large volume, it can cause the pipes to wobble and rattle over time. Installing insulation clips or hangers can help secure and stabilize the pipes and minimize any movement.
