Derry was initially settled in 1719, as a part of Londonderry, and remained that way for over 100 years when it was fully incorporated in 1827. Settled by Scottish-Irish families, the town was named for the Isle of Derry in Ireland. In the Gaelic language, the Doire means oak woods.
Since then, Derry has become home to many influential people such as poet Robert Frost, astronaut Alan Shephard, and General John Stark. Derry is located just an hour from Boston, an hour from the NH seacoast, and an hour from the White Mountains, making it a great place to live and do business. Derry is the fourth most populated community in the state, despite only being a town and not a city. Derry is also home to the prestigious private school, Pinkerton Academy, founded in 1814 and still in operation today.
