As most New Englanders know, our falls and winters can be dreary and cold. There’s nothing worse than that first brisk day and your heating system not kicking on. Stay on top of your heating system and stay warm during the cold months with our heating system maintenance tips!
Change Your Air Filters
To most homeowners, this can seem like an obvious tip, but it often goes unnoticed during those busy holiday months. Add a reminder in your calendar for the end of October or beginning of November so that you remember to change your air filters. That way, you’ll be good to go with the first chill of the season!
Clean Air Registers
When your return registers are dirty, they block the air flow in your heating system, causing it to shut on and off. The technicians at A+ Plumbing, Heating & Cooling recommend you vacuum any dirt or grime off of your registers. If this doesn’t work, remove your register and try cleaning with a gentle dish soap. Once dry, you can reinstall the register into your heating system. It’s important to make sure registers are open because otherwise they’ll restrict air flow and can cause your system to break down sooner.
Ideal Comfort Temperatures
We often get the questions, “What’s the correct temperature to set my thermostat at during the winter?” This answer will depend on the square feet of your home and the type of material it was built with. We usually see temperatures of anywhere from 68-78º. This number will depend on the amount of humidity. To add an extra level of comfort, think about using a humidifier.
