diagnosing thermostat issuesAll heating and air conditioning systems are controlled by a thermostat, telling it when to turn on and off, what temperature it should be at, and more. When there are issues with your thermostat, your home won’t heat and cool efficiently or not at all, which no one wants to deal with. Since thermostats are so easy to repair, they are oftentimes the first place to look for a solution to any HVAC issues.

Common HVAC symptoms that trace back to your thermostat:

  • No heat or cooled air coming from your system
  • Failure to set the desired temperature
  • Frequent system cycles

No Heat or Cooled Air

Is your HVAC system not producing heat or cooled air? Most commonly, this is an issue of lack of electrical current to the thermostat.

Possible Causes:

  • Tripped or blown circuit breaker
  • Dirty thermostat components
  • Loose wires or open connection
  • Bad battery

Possible Repairs:

  • Reset circuit breaker/replace blown fuse
  • Remove thermostat cover and clean all surfaces and coils before resetting the thermostat
  • Tighten loose connection, terminals, and wires
  • Is the display working? If not, it’s the batteries!

Failure to Set the Desired Temperature

Is your HVAC system working but not reaching the desired temperature?

Possible Causes:

  • Thermostat not mounted correctly
  • Heat anticipator is not set correctly

Possible Repairs:

  • Remove the thermostat cover, loosen the screws, straighten the thermostat, and retighten the screws
  • Adjust the heat anticipator

Frequent System Cycles

If your system is turning on and off frequently, there most likely is an issue with the electrical connections within the thermostat.

Possible Causes:

  • Dirty thermostat components
  • Heat anticipator is not set correctly

Possible Repairs:

  • Remove the thermostat cover and clean the components, especially the bimetallic coil and the switch
